Adirondack Rug Braiding

Helen Condon creates hand braided wool Adirondack rugs, baskets, wreaths and custom heirloom gifts from her studio, originally a boarding house built in 1863. It was modified in 1923 as a Grange Hall. In 2001, Helen restored the building to use for her studio, and ideal setting for the creation of hand braided Adirondack rugs, baskets, and gifts that become family heirlooms.
Helen was taught to braid rugs by her grandmother Sarah Campbell Taylor more than 50 years ago. The first big rug was nine feet round, and sat under Helen’s dining room table.
Using the skills in braiding and matching colors learned at age 13, combined with a better way of joining the braids learned from Sally Cheney in Hebron, Connecticut, Helen honed these skills to form her life work. She offers two series of patters: The Adirondack Series, including: Blue Heron, Marcy Sunset, Adirondack Camp, October Forest, August Wildflowers, The Creamery, and The Sunflower. The second is the English Country Rug Series, including: Paisley Shawl, Salmon Crepe, and Tiffany Dragonfly. She also does custom rugs.
Helen offers classes and instruction in rug braiding, helping to preserve the artistry and skill she learned from her grandmother.
